What is EPAT?

EPAT stands for Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technique. It is a technology used for treating foot and ankle problems. Some of the foot conditions that can be treated using EPAT include:

  • Chronic heel pain
  • Chronic muscle pain
  • Acute muscle pain
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Achilles tendinosis
  • Plantar fasciitis

EPAT utilizes low-frequency sound waves to heal injured areas of the foot or ankle. The sound waves are delivered to the injured area using an applicator resembling the probe used to perform ultrasounds. As the applicator is moved over the injured area in a circular motion, the sound waves travel through the area, emitting energy, and penetrating the soft tissue. The soft tissue cells respond to the energy by releasing biochemicals that aid the body in the healing process. The result is the gradual regeneration of damaged tissues.

EPAT treatments only take about ten minutes. Treatments are usually administered once per week for between three to six weeks. As the damaged tissues begin regenerating and healing and the original source of your foot or ankle is treated, pain and discomfort should diminish long term. Your Chicago podiatrist can help you decide if EPAT treatments are right for you.

EPAT can help you with a wide range of foot and ankle problems. It can heal damaged tissues and ultimately alleviate pain or discomfort caused by the initial injury. For EPAT treatments in Chicago, IL, schedule an appointment with Affiliated Podiatrists by calling (773) 631-2079.
